Today's Gospel is the beautiful parable of the Prodigal Son. It is a story of forgiveness. It is a story of a father's unconditional love. It is also the story of a son being brave enough to seek forgivenes. Is fear or anxiety holding you back from seeking the Lord's forgiveness? Maybe you don't feel worthy. Maybe you feel like your sin can't be forgiven. Maybe you don't want to admit the sin or confront the sin. Whatever the reason, know that our heavenly Father wants to help you through your struggle and is so ready and so excited to welcome you back home.
We encounter God's mercy and forgiveness in a profound and personal way through the Sacrament of Reconcilation. Through this sacrament of healing we hear the voice of God forgiving us of our sins through the priest. How awesome it is to actually hear that we are forgiven!
Going to confession can be a daunting experience, I know. It can be uncomfortable and awkward. After all of these years, I still feel a tad nervous and a bit awkward. It's a normal, human reaction. It's never easy to humble oneself and in the confessional we are truly humbled. But the amazing reality of being forgiven and having the opportunity to start over is so worth it. Remember that God loves us through the nerves and awkwardness!
Don't be afraid. This Lent, go and meet God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. If you're feeling uneasy or if you have questions, reach out to one of our parish priests. They will be happy to help you. It is a joyful moment for them too when we are reconciled to God and his Church.
Prayer:
Merciful and loving Father, help me to truly know that it is you who I encounter in the Sacrament of Reconcilation. Take away any fear or anxiety I may have about receiving the sacrament and grant me the peace and joy that comes with being forgiven and starting anew.
Action:
